Dead Rising 3 takes place in the fictional city of Los Perdidos, California, three days after a zombie outbreak (although these events take place almsot twelve years after the events of Dead Rising 2). Players take on the role of Nick Ramos, a mechanic struggling to survive the infestation while aslo rescuing survivors and finding a way out of the quarantined city.
Unlike previous Dead Rising games, which placed a large amount of focus on the idea of a 'ticking clock,' the developers have opted to allow players a bit more freedom in terms of how they chosose to explore the city and progress through the story. For die-hard fans of the classic Dead Rising style, there is Nightmare Mode, which features the countdown timers for each mission, stronger enemies and only allows players to save in bathrooms (or port-o-potties, as the case may be).
The world is completely open without any load times. Use vehicles to get from place to place, but don't think you'll be safe. Zombies can grab on to the car and break through the windows. Play as a straight shooting hero of the apocalypse or a maniac zombie hunter. During the IGN demo at Comic Con 2013 our writers put on a full-bodied shark mascot costume, dunked some traffic cones on the heads of zombies, and hacked them to bloody bits with a newly-crafted flaming sword.
Choose from hundreds of objects and weapons while surviving, or create your own weapons by combining existing objects. Examples on the live demo included taping a flashlight to a handgun and taping a circular saw to a sledgehammer.
Second screen functionality is being implemented in interesting ways with a connected phone app. After you launch the app, your phone detects Dead Rising 3 is running and adds cool interactive features. At E3 a player found a government phone in game and used a real smartphone to call in an airstrike on a massive pack of zombies. The phone app can also locate the closest weapons depot, health caches, and other map markers you may need.
The Zombies in Dead Rising 3 are plentiful, as is the Dead Rising experience. They will be attracted to your every move, but you will be able to distract them using many of the objects in the world. In addition, the world is seamless, you won't see a loading screen. The amount of zombies on screen at any given time supposedly will not impact technical performance and you will never have to wait while investigating Los Perididos.
